A Challenge to Brian

in

This stems back to several conversations Brian and I have had discussing why pop is "good" or "bad".  I am personally baffled by one thing I have discovered about Brian: He dislikes Lady Gaga songs and declares them "worthless", but he thinks a Ke$ha song has "something going on" and is apparently "a good pop song" (or, at least, a better one).  So, below, I present the two songs.  I ask Brian to listen to each carefully and tell me WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE!?

Lady Gaga's Bad Romance

Ke$ha's Tik Tok

My own bias is for Bad Romance.  It's interesting, dark, and far more melodic.  Lady Gaga has much more vocal talent, though Ke$ha shows vocal talent when not rapping like a girl who's even whiter than me.  But what pop ultimately comes down to, in my humble opinion, is this: Aesthetics.  It's all about what you LIKE.  There's no art in pop.  There's no deep, ulteriour meaning (even if they're trying to convince you there is).  It's just fun, and sex, and happy-sun-time.  I like both of the aforementioned songs for this reason, though I would rather be stuck with Lady Gaga over Ke$ha any day.  What I'm asking of Brian is...how can he argue that Ke$ha's song has some kind of artistic merit that Lady Gaga's is lacking?  Please compare the two songs for me to show me what it is you're seeing in the one that you don't see in the other.

TELL ME, BRIAN!  TELL ME!
